About
Face to face. Voice by voice. ONE by ONE.
Jacksonville is at a crossroads. Surveys show that residents feel education is the most important issue facing Duval County, yet we face ever-greater challenges to public schools. In order to create the public school system our city needs, more residents of Jacksonville must get involved and speak up to create a common vision for education in our city.
Like an orchestra, our education system needs everyone in our community — educators, students, citizens and government — to work together in concert with one another.
Here's how ONE by ONE, an initiative of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, intends to bring all of the sections together to play from the same sheet of music:
The ONE by ONE campaign begins with ONE in THREE, a multimedia art exhibition that features 20 Duval County students. As the exhibition moves around Jacksonville, the stories of these students will demonstrate how an engaged community works hand-in-hand with the school district to improve student success.
The first step in ONE by ONE will be more than 75 small community conversations. Those conversations will take place at kitchen tables, businesses and places of worship throughout our city to define a common vision for education in Jacksonville. In addition, the campaign will hold large-scale town hall meetings throughout the city.
The goal of the conversations is not simply to talk.
The conversations will be documented online, and from them will emerge a vision for education that truly represents our entire city. That vision will become a road map for the community to begin turning its aspirations into reality.
The thousands of people who participate in the process must ensure their elected officials support the vision, and work side-by-side with them to ensure they have the necessary resources and support to enact change. The Jacksonville Public Education Fund will be responsible for coordinating that action—holding to account not only public officials but also the people who elect them. We are ALL responsible for our children’s future.
About the Jacksonville Public Education Fund.
An engaged and politically vocal Jacksonville community demands that high-performing public schools be available to every child in Duval County—regardless of race, income and neighborhood. And it requires that public schools provide the rigorous instruction needed for student success in college and careers in the 21st-century global economy. The Jacksonville Public Education Fund is working toward those goals in three ways:
- Raising awareness and knowledge of critical education issues in Jacksonville by conducting high-impact research and analysis and publicizing that information.
- Engaging and empowering parents, teachers, business leaders and other community members to campaign for better schools.
- Advocating at the highest levels for research-based school improvement strategies, and holding district and community leaders accountable for improvement.
